More than half of Germans believe that Friedrich Merz will leave the post of German chancellor before the end of his term, a YouGov poll commissioned by the DPA news agency and published on Sunday, showed.
According to the poll, 36% of respondents expect Merz to remain chancellor this year but be replaced before the 2029 parliamentary elections, while 18% believe he will leave the chancellor’s post as early as this year. About 29% of respondents believe he will remain in office at least until the next regular elections in 2029, the poll showed.

A majority of those surveyed believe that Merz has not strengthened his standing in the party through personnel changes in the Cabinet, parliamentary faction and CDU leadership.

According to 36% of respondents, he has significantly lost authority, while another 31% believe he has rather lost influence. Only 1% of those surveyed believe that he has significantly strengthened his standing, while another 5% think this is rather the case.

When asked whom they personally consider more suitable for the post of German chancellor, 9% chose Merz, while 25% opted for his fellow party member, North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wust. Another 66% answered, "I don’t know."
The poll was conducted from August 14 to 17 among 2,091 people. No margin of error was provided.
