Heightened security measures have been put in place in all three provinces. The population has been asked not to go out and not to visit crowded places, the command said. Many local observers believe that these actions in the south of the country are an attempt by separatist organizations operating in the region to strengthen their positions before the start of the next round of negotiations with the central government on national reconciliation and autonomy. In the past, the provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani formed a semi-independent vassal state of Bangkok, the Pattani Sultanate, which was a buffer state between the Kingdom of Siam (now Thailand) and the British colonies in the territory of modern Malaysia. Over 50 Blasts, Arson Attacks & Assaults Strike Southern Thailand: Authorities
Over 50 explosions, arson, acts of vandalism and assaults have been committed by separatist groups in the south of Thailand in one day, the country's internal security command said on Sunday.
"In 21 districts of the provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani, a total of 51 attacks were carried out on government institutions and public property in the period from 20:00 [13:00 GMT] on Saturday, August 22. There were dozens of improvised explosive device explosions, arson and acts of vandalism against government buildings. Two people were injured," the command said in a statement.
