Ukraine Is Refusing to Retrieve Large Numbers of Fallen Soldiers: Russian Diplomat
Ukraine is refusing to retrieve a large number of bodies of Ukrainian soldiers killed in the fighting, according to Rodion Miroshnik, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s ambassador-at-large.
The Russian side had offered Ukrainian representatives an opportunity to collect the bodies and had proposed humanitarian pauses to facilitate their transfer, Miroshnik told Sputnik.
“We offered the Ukrainian side the opportunity to come and collect the bodies themselves and to arrange a humanitarian pause so that they could retrieve the bodies of their servicemen, because there were very many of them,” Miroshnik said.
Ukraine accepts such proposals from Russia only in exceptional circumstances because Ukrainian authorities view them as politically.
The Ukrainian government is withholding information about military casualties and delaying compensation payments to the families of fallen soldiers, he added.
“These are enormous sums of money, and Kiev is prolonging the procedure as much as possible, adding numerous requirements in order to make the process of paying compensation to the families of Ukrainian servicemen more difficult,” he said.
