India and Russia should deepen pharmaceutical cooperation as the two countries seek to expand bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, Dr. Divesh Kumar, Honorary Representative of Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India told Sputnik.
India currently accounts for the bulk of Russia-India trade, with Russia exporting significantly more to India than it imports, he said.
“Pharma is one of the [sectors] because India is known as the pharmacy of the world,” he emphasised, adding that Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers could help increase Russian imports from India.
Departure of several Western companies from the Russian market had created opportunities for Indian companies to establish local manufacturing operations, Kumar noted. Rather than focusing only on conventional generic medicines, he called for investment in products previously supplied by European and American companies.
“Indian pharma means quality, reliability, and affordability,” Kumar said, highlighting the potential for Indian manufacturers to provide high-quality medicines at substantially lower prices.
He identified biosimilars, vaccines and new drug technologies as particularly promising areas for joint ventures and research and development. Local production could also improve access to Russia’s government procurement market, where he estimated 60–65% of pharmaceutical business is linked to government tenders.
