11:25 03.09.2026 (Updated: 13:25 04.09.2026) Norway’s detention of the Russian vessel Professor Molchanov on a claim by Ukraine’s Naftogaz is an example of legal nihilism and Western lawlessness, Russia’s Far East and Arctic Development Minister Alexey Chekunkov said at the Eastern Economic Forum.
“The news came in overnight. Another example of legal nihilism and the free-for-all from Western countries. We have been on the Spitsbergen archipelago for 95 years; the Arktikugol trust has been operating there since 1931. The Roshydromet ship Professor Molchanov was used to keep in touch with our operation. Yesterday the Norwegian authorities detained it on a Naftogaz claim,” he told a session on cutting business risk as a foundation for economic growth.

"I can assure you the trust’s lawyers will give a proper legal response shortly. We will challenge the decision; there have been precedents," the minister added.
