Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh departed for a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, during which he is expected to hold discussions with the Sri Lankan leadership on a range of bilateral and regional issues.
The visit, scheduled from September 8 to 10, is aimed at strengthening defence cooperation, maritime security coordination, and broader strategic ties between the two neighbouring countries.
Singh is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior officials from India’s Defence and External Affairs ministries.
Sharing details of the visit on social media platform X, Rajnath Singh highlighted the importance of Sri Lanka in India’s regional engagement strategy and emphasised the long-standing historical and civilizational links between the two nations.
India and Sri Lanka have maintained close cooperation in several areas, including defence, regional security, trade, and economic development. Relations between the two countries have been further strengthened by India’s support during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis and humanitarian assistance provided after natural disasters, including relief efforts following Cyclone Ditwah in 2025.
