Ukraine Peace Settlement Must Recognise Ground Realities: Russian FM Lavrov
Answering a question from ex-judge-turned-podcast host Andrew Napolitano about the recent Moscow visit of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Russian television, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the substance of the talks was based on key elements of President Donald Trump’s position on Ukraine.
“He said that they should forget even trying to drag Ukraine into NATO. He said that this was clear long before Putin. The issue is closed, and there is no need to try to reopen it,” Lavrov said.
Another element of the US approach is the recognition of “realities on the ground.”
“When we talk about realities, we are talking about people, not territories,” Lavrov said, adding that Moscow believes these realities are connected to the views expressed by residents in referendums.
Lavrov said that the fact that US contacts with Russia, including talks with President Vladimir Putin, are based on these realities “causes a positive response” from Moscow and creates grounds for continuing dialogue.
