The International Monetary Fund (IMF) suddenly rejected the appointment of Ricardo Reis, a professor at the London School of Economics, as head of its research department and chief economist. The Financial Times reported.
The decision came after the IMF learned of Reis' criticism of US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, the outlet highlighted, citing sources.
Reis reportedly warned that import duties would lead to higher prices for US consumers and a new wave of inflation. He also claimed that the tariffs would immediately raise the cost of imports, and make manufacturing in the United States more difficult, expensive, and inefficient, the report said.
The IMF's Economic Counsellor and Head of the Research Department leads a group of more than 100 economists and helps define the fund's policy agenda. In July, the fund appointed Silvana Tenreyro, a former member of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee, to this position. Tenreyro started working last month, despite the fact that she also estimated impact of duties on economic growth as negative, but criticized them less actively, the newspaper noted.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is responsible for appointments to senior positions in the organization, but the US government, as the fund's largest shareholder, has significant informal influence, the report added.
