Indonesia is continuing to buy Russian oil, with the second phase of purchases already underway, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Friday.
"Yes, it has already begun," he was quoted as saying by Indonesian state news agency Antara when asked about the second phase of oil purchases from Russia.
The minister said that oil was being imported under intergovernmental agreements. The authorities determine priority supply sources based on the global situation, economic feasibility and compliance with existing rules, he said.
The government is guided in its energy policy by the interests of the population and the principles of an independent foreign policy, the minister added.
Russia and Indonesia reached oil purchase agreements after Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited Moscow in April. Jakarta plans to purchase around 150 million barrels of oil in stages by the end of the year.
On August 5, Bahlil Lahadalia said that the first batch of Russian oil had arrived in Indonesia. The Indonesian authorities are preparing a long-term contract for oil purchases from Russia, he added.
