Speaking at a meeting of Global South countries held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Jaishankar said the global environment was being shaped by intensifying conflicts, pressure on supply chains and trade, fragmentation of investment flows, mounting debt distress and insufficient development finance.He said countries of the Global South should work together to overcome major challenges, including constraints affecting supply chains, finance and connectivity.The foreign minister also called for efforts to ensure food security by addressing problems related to energy availability, grain and fertiliser supplies, while promoting fair economic and trade practices.Jaishankar stressed that energy resources and their pricing should not be manipulated for political purposes, particularly at a time when developing economies remain vulnerable to external shocks and disruptions in global markets.He also underlined the importance of protecting maritime resources and ensuring the safety and security of seafarers and commercial shipping.In addition, Jaishankar highlighted the need for effective governance of artificial intelligence to prevent new forms of division. He also called for greater representation of Global South countries in decision-making structures dealing with issues that directly affect them.
