Europe is watching the development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) from afar, since Western business is not allowed to participate in this project, Director of the Department of European Issues at the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladislav Maslennikov told Sputnik.
"European countries, for understandable reasons, are, so to speak, watching from afar for now," Maslennikov said when asked about European interest in NSR shipping.
However, this does not indicate a lack of European interest in the NSR, the diplomat said.
"Under far-fetched politicized pretexts, Western business is simply not allowed to take advantage of the objective benefits of this promising route and the additional opportunities it opens up," Maslennikov said.
