Russia and its partners effectively coordinate work within the G20, which allows them to successfully defend the position of Global South countries, Russia's G20 sherpa Denis Agafonov said.
"We are in constant contact with our Chinese, Brazilian, and Indian partners... I believe we carry out this coordination effectively and quite productively, which generally allows us to defend the positions of Global South countries specifically," Agafonov said at a press conference with Russian media correspondents in Washington.
Interaction between BRICS states on the G20 platform is built on a constant and productive basis, he added.
He also recalled that the current US presidency began after a four-year period of G20 leadership by BRICS countries, which helped set the tone for the work of the entire format. Despite the change in presidency and certain nuances in the approaches of individual states, coordination between the association's countries remains productive and allows for reliably protecting common priorities.
"BRICS is now so economically substantial, with 40% of global GDP, that it is quite natural that the voice of BRICS countries sounds increasingly weighty, and, accordingly, both the demand for and the significance of this coordination are naturally only growing," Agafonov said.
Speaking at the plenary session of the 23rd annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that BRICS's share in the global economy is constantly increasing, adding that this growth occurs every year and is confirmed by objective statistical data.
