Negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States had reached a “plateau”, with further concessions from either side likely to be “very difficult”, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday.
Sitharaman highlighted the substantial trade surplus India maintains with the United States, saying this was a key feature of the bilateral economic relationship.

“The trade balance is very much in our favour,” she said, adding that the US would seek to reduce the imbalance and address what it considers losses accumulated over the years.

Further she indicated that India’s economic engagement with Russia remains active, with negotiations on bilateral investment protection agreements being underway.
“If everything goes well, we should be concluding Bilateral Investment Protection with at least three more countries by December. Negotiations are going on with many countries, including Russia,” she said.
