We remember Russia's support during our struggle for independence, its yearly recognition of Timor Leste's independence in 2002, and the establishment of diplomatic relations shortly thereafter," Freitas said at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.Freitas pointed to the historic significance of his visit to Moscow, saying that it is the first official visit of an East Timorese foreign minister to Russia in the history of bilateral relations."My visit to Moscow brings with me clear objective to build on the positive political relationship between our two countries and translate it into a stronger, more substantive and mutually beneficial partnership," Freitas said.Culture and humanitarian exchanges remain an important bridge between the peoples of the two states, Freitas said. The country is home to approximately 1.4 million people, nearly 75% of whom are under the age of 35. East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta said in an interview with RIA Novosti in February 2025 that his administration hoped to open an embassy in Moscow.
