India’s Defence Ministry has signed contracts for the GSAT-7C communication satellite and Varunastra heavy-weight torpedoes for the Indian Air Force and Navy.Under a $270 million deal with NewSpace India Limited (ISRO’s commercial arm), the indigenous GSAT-7C satellite will provide the Indian Air Force with secure, resilient beyond-line-of-sight connectivity through military software-defined radios, thereby supporting operations when conventional links fail. The second contract, worth about $162 million, was signed with state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited for Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, the ship-launched, electrically propelled weapon can engage enemy submarines at long ranges in both shallow and deep waters. Featuring advanced manoeuvring capabilities, it is designed to counter modern quiet submarines and was first inducted into the Indian Navy in 2016.
