India Warns Of 'Disturbing' Anti-Hindu Violence and Rising Racism in US
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep concern over the alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in America’s Illinois state, a statement said on Thursday.
In its statement, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the “anti-Hindu and racist nature” of the alleged plot, which included references to violence against people of Indian origin, was deeply disturbing.
“The reported anti-Hindu and racist nature of the alleged plot, including references to violence against people of Indian origin, is particularly disturbing,” MEA stated, underscoring that the incident further added to growing concerns over “racist hostility and anti-India hate in the US”.
The MEA urged “for greater vigilance, zero tolerance for hate-motivated violence, and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of the Indian community.”
Further, the Indian government has called on the US authorities to “thoroughly investigate” the incident, bring to justice people behind the plot and take necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future, according to the statement.
Besides the police and FBI, the US Justice Department will also be investigating the incident, Assistant Attorney General (AAG) Harmeet Dhillion said in a post.
A statement by the Palatine Police Department in the US said that the 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis was taken into custody on 11 October while he was leaving his residence to carry out the plot. US media reported that Paporakis had already been at the temple and tried to open fire earlier on Sunday, but couldn’t do so because his gun got jammed. He returned to his mother’s home and looked up the internet as well as called a work colleague to inform about his plan, the report said. The colleague told on him to police, who rushed to arrest him before he could leave.
The police said that they recovered from him a manifesto titled, “Why I Fought: A.K.A: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” expressing white supremacist and extremist ideologies, including references to violence directed toward individuals of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent. Hundreds of rounds of ammunition were recovered from his possession, the police said.
The mass shooting
attempt took place during a month of festivities for the Hindu community globally, with many Indian-descent members visiting temples during the period.
The plot also took place less than a fortnight after a Hindu temple was attacked with bricks in the Ohio state, with the incidents prompting Hindu and Indian organisations in the US asking the community to stay vigilant.
