India has stepped up its infrastructure development in the Union Territory of Ladakh, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurating projects worth $353 million aimed at improving transport links, strengthening power infrastructure, conserving water resources, and preserving the Himalayan region’s historical legacy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his virtual address, referred to the projects as a new chapter in Ladakh’s development, stating that they would enhance connectivity, boost tourism and trade, and strengthen electricity and water supply while preserving the region’s heritage amidst its harsh terrain and climate.

New Leh Airport Terminal

The biggest development is the newly expanded passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh.
Constructed at a cost of about $67 million and spanning 23,800 square metres, the modern facility will raise the airport’s yearly capacity from one million to 3.5 million passengers.
Designed for Ladakh’s severe climate, it uses geothermal heating — the first such system at any Indian airport — alongside solar power.

298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road

The newly built 298-kilometre Nimmu–Padum–Darcha Road aims to slash travel time from 12 hours to 3 hours.
Built at a cost of around $263 million, the route links Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the Zanskar Valley, providing an additional corridor to Ladakh.
Officials expect it to ease the movement of people and goods, strengthen logistical options for the armed forces, and bring remote communities closer to healthcare, schools, and markets.

9 MW Hanu Hydropower Project & Transmission Line

On the energy front, PM Modi inaugurated the 9-Megawatt Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66-Kilovolt double-circuit Dah–Hanu–Khaltsi transmission line.
Together, these projects are intended to expand local power generation and improve electricity transmission in the region.

40 Water Bodies Under Project Him Sarovar

The Prime Minister also inaugurated 40 water bodies across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar. This initiative aims to conserve water, support irrigation, and help communities manage seasonal shortages.

India’s First Petroglyph Conservation Park

Adding a cultural dimension to the development drive, PM Modi inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh.
This park aims to safeguard ancient rock carvings that provide valuable evidence of Ladakh’s historical and cultural evolution.
All these projects underscore the government’s intensified focus on Ladakh since it became a Union Territory, expanding roads, power, water access, and heritage protection in one of India’s most challenging yet strategically located Himalayan territory.
