The United States is increasingly recognising the negative effects of sanctions and exploring ways to move forward despite the restrictions it has imposed, Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week international forum, Dmitriev said Washington had created what he described as a sanctions trap and was now seeking mechanisms to overcome the resulting constraints.
“The Americans have driven themselves into this sanctions trap. And they are trying to find the right mechanisms — how to move forward based on the very restrictions that they themselves have created,” he said.
Dmitriev added that awareness of the benefits of Russian-American cooperation for global markets was growing in the United States.
He also said Moscow and Washington were discussing joint energy projects in the Arctic, noting that a diesel fuel arrangement was just one of several initiatives under consideration.
According to Dmitriev, Ukraine’s reaction to Russia-US engagement had further worsened Kyiv’s relations with Washington.
His remarks come amid discussions about potential areas of economic and energy cooperation between Russia and the United States, despite ongoing sanctions and broader geopolitical tensions.
