Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom prepares to build Indonesia's first nuclear power plant — a project that will deliver cheap electricity to communities and industries while attracting investment to the region.
The plant will serve as a reliable long-term energy source for Indonesia and marks a milestone in the country's energy history, Yudi Utomo Imardjoko, director of energy company PT Pembangkit Listrik Nuklir, told Sputnik.
The two countries signed an agreement under which Rosatom will supply two floating nuclear power units with a combined capacity of 200 MW to power northern Halmahera Island in eastern Indonesia.
The project is planned for completion by 2031, with the plant's operational life expected to reach 60 years.
Imardjoko said the partnership would lower electricity costs for both the general public and the industrial sector, while drawing in industrial investments that require a stable power supply.
"For the first time in Indonesia's history, we will have a nuclear power plant that provides affordable and reliable energy for the long term," he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to President Prabowo Subianto and President Vladimir Putin for the support they have provided to the project.
The deal underscores deepening energy cooperation between Jakarta and Moscow, with the floating units expected to bolster power supply on Halmahera — a region rich in nickel and other mineral resources central to Indonesia's downstream industrial ambitions.
