Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered India’s national statement at the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government (CHG) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Dushanbe on Tuesday.
India supports connectivity projects that connect markets, facilitate trade and create new opportunities for development, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told the SCO meeting attended by 10 member countries, including Russia, China and Iran.
“Initiatives like the International North-South Transport Corridor and Chabahar Port can adequately contribute to linking Central Asia with broader markets,” Singh said, while also stressing that connectivity projects should also “respect sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
Following the expiry of the US sanctions’ waiver on India-funded Chabahar Port in April 2026, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated on several occasions that it remans engaged with “stakeholders” on the issue.
In response to a question from Sputnik India ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bishkek for the SCO Summit last month, MEA officials described Chabahar as an “important aspect” of New Delhi’s engagement with Central Asia.
During his SCO address today, Singh also expressed concern over disruptions in supply chains and the adverse effects on energy and food security due to conflicts and geopolitical tensions.
“SCO's assessment will be made on the basis of knowing whether it can find common ground and work on it,” stated Singh.
Singh spelled out India’s concerns over terrorism, stating that there shouldn’t be an “double-standards” on the issue.
“There can be no place for those who provide terrorists with finance, support, or safe havens. The entire ecosystem of terrorism must be firmly and collectively dismantled,” Singh said.
