Russian and Chinese Supreme Court Chiefs Sign Updated Co-operation Agreement
Igor Krasnov, Chairman of Russia’s Supreme Court, and Zhang Jun, President of China’s Supreme People’s Court, have signed an updated agreement on co-operation during Krasnov’s visit to China.
The deal is intended to take judicial and legal co-operation between the two countries to a new level.
"I am convinced that our meeting takes the existing co-operation to a qualitatively new level. The signing of the updated agreement between the supreme courts provides the necessary basis for this," Krasnov stressed during the meeting.
He proposed that a co-operation programme for 2027–2028 be developed to implement the agreement.
"I propose that we focus on several practical areas, including mutual visits by judges and specialists to study best practice, the joint development of scientific and educational co-operation, and the exchange of experience in the digital transformation of justice," Krasnov said.
The agreement signed in Beijing sets out the general guidelines for Russian-Chinese co-operation in the field of justice and opens new opportunities for professional dialogue between judges of the two countries, the press service of the Supreme Court of Russia explained.
As stated in the document, the parties are guided by the desire to improve relations and mutually beneficial co-operation in the sphere of justice. The agreement is based on the provisions of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Co-operation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China of 16 July 2001.
Among the main areas of co-operation are the exchange of experience and judicial practice, interaction on matters relating to the organisation of court work and the administration of the judicial system, the implementation of measures connected with the fulfilment of international treaties to which
Russia and China are parties (including treaties on legal assistance in civil, family and criminal cases), the study of experience in the development of information technologies in judicial proceedings, and the holding of joint events for the training and professional development of judicial personnel.
The document provides for the organisation of mutual visits by experts for consultations on legal matters, participation in conferences, seminars and round tables, as well as the coordination of positions and joint actions at multilateral international events.
The new agreement replaces those previously in force from 1998 and 2006.
