About 100 Vessels Switch to Russian Flag: Deputy PM
About a hundred large-capacity vessels have switched to the Russian flag, Russian deputy prime minister in charge of transport, Andrei Nikitin, said.
"If we talk about the merchant fleet, you know, the president at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum said that vessels should switch to the Russian flag. This process is underway... Already, several dozen large vessels, closer to a hundred, have switched to the Russian flag," Nikitin said in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
The former transport minister, who was appointed deputy prime minister on Thursday, said that the Transport Ministry had taken action to this effect.
"Since the St. Petersburg forum took place, a very serious number of vessels have switched from foreign flags to the Russian one. We have already taken a number of actions. We need to complete a number of other works," he said.
Russia stands ready to deepen transport cooperation, including in civil aviation, with those countries that are ready to build fair and equal relations, the deputy prime minister said.
"In transport, fairness and reciprocity are very important. Therefore, we will certainly cooperate with all those countries that are ready to build fair and equal relations with us," Nikitin replied to a question about what a warming of relations between Russia and the United States could bring.
Russian air transport agency Rosaviatsia and the Ministry of Transport are in contact with aviation authorities of all countries to support any positive trends, he added.
President Vladimir Putin said at at the SPIEF forum in St. Petersburg in June that the Russian government should improve the national merchant flag. Russia will increase the capacity of seaports and the trans-Arctic transport corridor as a global artery and seek to become a global leader in terms of the total deadweight of the merchant fleet, he said.
