The first tanker carrying Russian diesel fuel has set off for the United States, according to vessel-tracking data seen by Sputnik.
The vessel departed from the port of Primorsk in the Leningrad Region and is bound for New York. It is carrying 326,800 barrels of petroleum products, and the tanker has a displacement of 50,000 tonnes.Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak previously said that supplies would initially come mainly from ports on the Baltic Sea.
In early October, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation, following which the White House announced an agreement on diesel fuel.
To facilitate the supplies, the US Treasury Department issued a sanctions exemption valid until 7 April. The day after the talks, the Russian government partially lifted its ban on diesel fuel exports. According to Novak, Moscow is prepared to supply around 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the US and global markets in October, a further 500,000 tonnes in November, and up to one million tonnes in December.
Trump said the deal was needed not only by the United States but by the world as a whole, arguing that it would drive diesel prices down at a record pace. Putin, meanwhile, told US special envoy Steve Witkoff at a recent meeting that diesel prices on global markets had already fallen by 5–6%.
