India is set to strengthen its indigenous satellite navigation system as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) prepares to launch the GSLV-F18 mission on October 30 from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, carrying the NVS-03 satellite to strengthen India’s indigenous NavIC system, according to ISRO.
The GSLV-F18 rocket will place NVS-03 into Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO), marking another step in India’s efforts to enhance its independent positioning, navigation, and timing capabilities, the statement said.
NVS-03 is the third satellite in a five-satellite second-generation series designed to improve the performance of the Navigation with Indian Constellation's (NavIC) and extend the system’s operational capacity.
Weighing around 2,232 kg, it has a planned mission life of 12 years and carries navigation payloads and a highly stable Rubidium atomic clock.
NavIC provides India with an independent navigation system, reducing reliance on foreign services.
It supports civilian applications, including real-time tracking of trains and fishing vessels, transport and disaster management, while also serving defence requirements such as navigation for missiles, warships, and aircraft.

More Satellites in Pipeline

ISRO is developing the next satellites in the series, NVS-04 and NVS-05, to strengthen the constellation’s capacity and long-term reliability.
