Russia's Zakharova Urges European Authorities to Listen to Their Own People
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Saturday urged European authorities to listen to their own people.
Zakharova that the renowned Italian pop singer Al Bano asked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to abandon sanctions against Russia and initiate efforts to reach a long-term settlement in Ukraine. The singer also noted the deep historical and cultural ties between Russia and Italy.
"The people, and their prominent representatives, such as Al Bano, once again prove to be far wiser than their European leaders. Perhaps it is time to listen?" Zakharova said on Telegram.
Zakharova added that, judging by recent events, the Italian authorities are struggling to acknowledge perspectives that do not align with the established political agenda.
The Italian authorities have claimed to see a "foreign hand" behind youth protests, while the country's media have begun speculating about "Russian shadows" lurking behind Italian teenagers, the spokeswoman said.
"When Italian citizens express discontent, the authorities suspect foreign influence. This raises a more serious question: where does the search for foreign interference end, and where does an unwillingness to listen to one's own citizens begin?" Zakharova said.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it can withstand the sanctions pressure of the West. Moscow has noted that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of its sanctions policy. Western countries themselves frequently stated that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective.
