Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and fellow Russian MPs have paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, leader of India’s independence movement, by laying a wreath at his cremation site at the Raj Ghat memorial complex.
The Russian delegation observed a minute’s silence in Gandhi’s memory before scattering rose petals over the memorial in keeping with tradition. The site features a black marble platform beside an eternal flame, symbolising the enduring legacy of the father of the Indian nation.
Foreign heads of state and other senior dignitaries visiting India regularly pay their respects at Raj Ghat.
Volodin is leading the Russian delegation on a working visit to India, his first overseas trip as State Duma Speaker in the new parliamentary term.
In New Delhi, Russian MPs will attend the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, hosted by India as the group’s current chair. This year’s forum is focused on “Strengthening the Role of Parliaments in Advancing Human-Centred Development.”
