Indian Air Force’s Russian-origin fighter aircraft, including the Sukhoi-30MKI and MiG-29, emerged as major attractions at the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Wings Over Ganges airshow.
Held at Namo Ghat over the Ganga on October 22, 24 and 25, the aerial display marked the IAF’s 94th anniversary and featured around 100 aircraft, including fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present.
The showcase featured frontline fighter aircraft, including the Sukhoi-30MKI, MiG-29, Rafale, Mirage-2000, Jaguar and indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. The aircraft performed coordinated formations and aerial manoeuvres, demonstrating the IAF’s flying skills and operational capabilities.
The Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI and MiG-29 were among the notable aircraft in a diverse line-up that also highlighted India’s growing indigenous aviation capabilities, particularly through the Tejas fighter and Light Combat Helicopter Prachand.
The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team emerged as one of the major attractions, performing precision manoeuvres and synchronised formations above the river. Three Kiran aircraft also flew in a ‘V’ formation, creating a display in the colours of the national flag.
The Sarang Helicopter Display Team added to the spectacle with coordinated helicopter manoeuvres, while Mi-17 helicopters carrying the Tricolour participated in an Omkar formation.
The programme extended beyond fighter jets, featuring transport and support aircraft, including the C-17 Globemaster, C-130J Super Hercules, C-295 and AN-32.
Helicopters such as the Apache, Chinook and Prachand also formed part of the wider showcase.
According to the event organisers, around 100 aircraft were part of the aerial display, including 52 fighter aircraft, 15 transport aircraft, 32 helicopters and one heritage aircraft, operating from 12 air bases.
The airshow brought together military aviation, precision flying and public engagement, offering residents and visitors a glimpse of the IAF’s diverse aircraft fleet and capabilities against the iconic backdrop of Varanasi’s riverfront.
