According to the Defence Ministry, around 82% of the approved procurement value will come from domestic companies, reflecting India’s continued push to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. The proposed helicopter procurement addresses a longstanding requirement of the Army, while tracked self-propelled artillery will provide mobile firepower to support advancing armoured formations. VSHORADS will strengthen protection against drones and other low-altitude aerial threats. For the Indian Navy, the council approved the procurement of decoy systems designed to divert incoming enemy missiles, enhancing the protection and combat capabilities of indigenously built warships. The latest approvals are part of India’s broader efforts to modernise its armed forces, strengthen operational readiness and expand the role of domestic manufacturers in meeting the country’s defence requirements.

India Approves Defence Purchases Worth $24.5 Billion, Prioritizing Local Industry
18:26 26.10.2026 (Updated: 18:28 26.10.2026) India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted in-principle approval for the procurement of weapons and military equipment worth approximately $24.5 billion for the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy.
According to the Defence Ministry, around 82% of the approved procurement value will come from domestic companies, reflecting India’s continued push to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
The Army’s planned acquisitions include high-mobility vehicles, tracked self-propelled artillery guns, light multi-role helicopters and very short-range air defence systems (VSHORADS). The council has also approved anti-drone systems, short-range unmanned aerial vehicles, surveillance drones and long-range loitering munitions for strike, reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
The proposed helicopter procurement addresses a longstanding requirement of the Army, while tracked self-propelled artillery will provide mobile
firepower to support advancing armoured formations.
VSHORADS will strengthen protection against drones and other low-altitude aerial threats.
For the Indian Navy, the council approved the procurement of decoy systems designed to divert incoming enemy missiles, enhancing the protection and combat capabilities of indigenously built warships.
The Indian Air Force will acquire helicopters for surveillance, logistics and emergency operations. Approval has also been granted for air defence systems and Doppler radars to improve responses to aerial threats and provide accurate local weather information for operations near the front lines.
The latest approvals are part of India’s broader efforts to modernise its armed forces, strengthen operational readiness and expand the role of domestic manufacturers in meeting the country’s defence requirements.
