Russia’s multi-layered air defense system is countering Ukrainian drone attacks carried out with NATO assistance, and that it will be further reinforced with weapons based on new physical principles, Military expert and air defense historian Yury Kanutov told Sputnik.
“About 60% of drones are intercepted over the Bryansk and Kursk regions. That is the first line of defence, and the next layers provide additional capability to stop enemy weapons,” Kanutov said.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, on the night of October 29, Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Russia to date, and Russian air defenses intercepted 1,214 Ukrainian drones overnight.
“To gain extra leverage at the negotiating table, Ukraine wants to strengthen its position. That includes launching large ground offensives on several fronts, as well as striking [Russian] energy facilities and civilian infrastructure,” Kanutov said.
Ukraine is trying to relocate its drone production facilities abroad to boost output. Meanwhile, Russia is targeting Ukrainian drone manufacturing centers and logistics hubs, which is disrupting arms supplies via the Black Sea and through Romania and Moldova.
Russia is also testing and producing weapons based on new physical principles to counter drone attacks.

“Two new types of laser weapons were shown at the Russia-Africa Forum. Rostec also announced the completion of tests of an electromagnetic gun designed to counter drones,” Kanutov said.
These laser and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons could largely neutralise the drone threat, the expert concluded.
