Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the situation surrounding a torture chamber near Kiev, saying there are many such places in Ukraine.
"There are many such torture chambers in Ukraine. [Volodymyr] Zelensky’s regime rests precisely on them," Zakharova told Sputnik.
On Monday, Ukrainian media reported that armed men were holding around 40 people in the basement of a private house near Kiev. An ambulance arrived at the scene; a medical worker said she had been sent a video showing that some of those in the basement were in a critical condition, with many bearing injuries consistent with torture.
Later, the police stated that National Guard of Ukraine servicemen were based in the house. National Guard commander Alexander Pivnenko said the four injured men were deserters. He described the house as a "temporary base" and acknowledged that mobilised personnel were also being held there.
Mass protests began outside the house, after which the National Guard agreed to release all the detained men to a medical facility for health checks.
Several people were beaten to death in this torture chamber alone over the past, said Artem Dmytruk, a Verkhovna Rada MP who left Ukraine.
