WASHINGTON, November 4 (Sputnik) - The performance of Republicans in the US midterm congressional elections is linked to the fact that President Donald Trump himself was not on the ballot, as his supporters are more likely to turn out to vote when he is running, a White House official told RIA Novosti.
CNN and NBC project that the Democrats will gain control of the US House of Representatives following the congressional elections. They also flipped several Senate seats from the Republicans.
"President Trump was not on the ballot, and it’s proven that Trump voters show up when he is on the ballot," the administration official explained.
According to the official, the quality of the Republican candidates also played a significant role.
"Candidate quality matters, and President Trump did a better job promoting many of the candidates on the ballot than the candidates did themselves" he noted.
In these midterm congressional elections, Americans voted for all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 senators. Prior to the vote, Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress, holding 53 seats in the Senate compared to 47 held by Democrats and independents who caucus with them. The final election results will determine whether the Republican Party can maintain its majority in Congress for the remaining two years of President Trump’s term.
