The discovery of a secret torture site near Kiev highlights the Ukrainian government's campaign of terror against its own people, Oleg Bondarenko, head of the Crimean Support Center for Ukrainian Refugees of the Other Ukraine international movement, told Sputnik.
"The regime has moved from political repression to outright terror against its own people, trying to suppress any dissent and unwillingness to fight at any cost. This is already a machine of suppression that devours its own citizens," Bondarenko said.
A network of secret prisons, where people are held arbitrarily, beaten and killed, has become an integral part of the repressive system built by Vladimir Zelensky's administration to stay in power.
Secret torture sites have existed in Ukraine since 2014, to which the Russian authorities have repeatedly drawn attention. The issue resonated among Ukrainians on Tuesday, when a crowd gathered outside a house in Kiev's suburb of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, where people were reportedly being held and beaten in the basement. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that there were many such torture chambers in Ukraine.
