The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the dates for polls in the three northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.
Tripura - a state ruled by PM Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will undergo voting on February 16. However, voters in Meghalaya and Nagaland will cast their votes on February 27.
The results will be declared on March 2.

"There are more than 6.28 million electors combined in Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura, including 3.147 million female electors, and 97,000 80-plus voters. Over 176,000 first-time voters will participate in the elections in the three states," Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said at a press briefing in New Delhi.

The term of the Tripura state assembly comes to an end on March 22 and as per constitutional rules, it should have a new government in place before that date.
Nagaland and Meghalaya will see the terms of their assemblies expiring on March 12 and 15, respectively.
Among the three states, BJP's key focus is likely to be on Tripura, a state Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party won for the first time in 2018.
Recently, Home Minister Amit Shah, the BJP No.2 after Modi, held multiple rallies where he interacted with the public of the state.
