After hundreds of people lost their homes due to the town of Joshimath sinking in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, fresh cracks reportedly appeared in a popular tourist destination, Nainital's lower Mall Road.
Scientists say this time, the cracks are as large as 10-feet long and one or two inches wide.
While the Public Works Departments (PWD) have repaired the cracks by filling them with substance and leveling them, geologists have called for a halt on construction work along mall road, declaring the whole area a landslide-prone zone.
This is not the first time that Mall Road in Nainital has developed cracks: back in 2018, part of Mall Road broke down and fell into the lake.
In another incident, several cracks appeared near the Grand Hotel in the Mallital area of lower Mall Road.
Experts have shown signs of worry as in the last five years, cracks have developed more frequently on Mall Road.
The part of Rajpura, which is above Mall Road, is also in danger and prone to sinking.
Meanwhile, the administration has advised commuters to drive carefully and slowly on the road and sign boards have been put up urging motorists to drive cautiously.
