Iranian President Travels to Syria For First Time Since Civil War Broke Out

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi travelled to Damascus during an official two-day trip to Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian side on Wednesday.

It was the first visit of the Iranian president to the Syrian capital since the start of the civil war in the country in 2011.
The last Iranian president to make a trip to Syria was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2010.
The meeting between Raisi and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can be viewed as a failure of the United States to isolate Iran by means of sanctions and media bias: despite western pressure, Tehran has succeded in building strong and long-term partnerships.
