The INS Mormugao, India's newest indigenously built stealth-guided missile destroyer, accomplished a major milestone as the warship successfully neutralized a supersonic target at sea, the Navy said on Tuesday.
"Indian Navy's latest indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao successfully carried out engagement of a sea-skimming supersonic target," a Navy statement read.
India's blue water force added that Mormugao's successful conduct of sea-skimming a supersonic target is proof of the Navy's "future combat readiness" as well as its "commitment towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India)".
Around 75 percent of Mormugao's content has been locally manufactured, making it one of the best examples of India's domestic manufacturing prowess.
The development comes only 10 days after the Mormugao hit the "bulls-eye" during its maiden Brahmos Supersonic missile test-firing.
"INS Mormugao, the latest guided-missile Destroyer, successfully hit 'Bulls Eye' during her maiden #Brahmos Supersonic cruise missile firing. The ship and her potent weapon, both indigenous, mark another shining symbol of #Aatmanirbharta and Indian Navy's firepower at sea," the Navy tweeted at the time.

What is INS Mormugao and Its Capabilities

The 7,400-tonne guided missile destroyer is described as one of the "most potent ships" by the Indian Navy.
The Mormugao has a width of 17 metres while its length spans 163 metres.
The Navy further states that Mormugao is among some of the most advanced missile destroyers in the world, with its stealth features helping the force in its current missions at present, as well as operations of the future.
As part of its weapons package, the Mormugao has an array of domestically produced weapons in its storage, including anti-submarine rocket launchers, torpedo launchers, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, and an advanced combat management system.
