Opposition Submit Memorandum to President over Violence-Hit Manipur

As proceedings of the parliament continue to be disrupted due to the violence in the north-eastern state Manipur, senior members of the newly formed opposition bloc – Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) – met President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday and sought her intervention to restore a peace in the violence-hit state.

They also submitted a memorandum to the president urging her to “press upon the Prime Minister to urgently address the Parliament on the prevailing situation in Manipur followed by a detailed and comprehensive discussion on the matter”, as the bloc argued that the situation in the state had reached a critical point in the last few weeks, witnessing a complete breakdown of law and order.

The 31-member delegation of the opposition bloc included 21 parliamentarians who visited Manipur last week.

In the memorandum submitted to the president, the INDIA bloc said: “The impact of the violence has been devastating, with more than 200 lives lost, over 500 injuries, and more than 5,000 houses gutted in arson-related incidents. A staggering number of over 60,000 people are displaced, living in dìre conditions in relief camps across the state. The delegation visited relief camps in three different conflict-affected areas, including Churachandpur, Moirang, and Imphal, where they interacted with the affected people, listened to their concerns, and witnessed firsthand the dire living conditions, especially for women and children”.

While talking to the media after meeting Murmu, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of parliament) and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said: “31 members of the INDIA alliance met President Murmu and 21 parliamentarians’ delegation that visited Manipur briefed her on the situation there”.

“We submitted a memorandum to the President. We briefed the President, especially on atrocities against women, rehabilitation and other conditions in Manipur”, he further said.

The meeting of the opposition bloc with the president came during the Monsoon Session of the parliament. The session has witnessed disruptions ever since it commenced on 20 July, as the opposition has been disrupting the proceedings of the both houses of parliament, demanding discussion and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the violence in Manipur.
