Authorities have imposed section 144 banning public gatherings and protests for a week in several districts of Punjab following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.
The districts include Kasur, Jhelum, Mianwali, Mandi Bahauddin, and Rawalpindi.
“There is a ban on all gatherings, public meetings, demonstrations, sit-ins and rallies for seven days under section 144. Those violating the order will be tackled with strictly,” authorities said in the official statement.
Khan was arrested on Saturday from his Zaman Park residence soon after a court found him guilty of “corrupt practices” in the Toshakhana case and sentenced him to three years in prison.
He has also been disqualified from politics for a period of five years, local media reported.
Following the court's verdict, police in Islamabad and Rawalpindi issued a high-security alert.
PTI supporters carried out a peaceful protest holding the party's flags over the arrest of their leader across Pakistan.
The supporters urged the Supreme Court to hear its review petition filed earlier in the day against the maintainability of the Toshakhana case.
This is the second time since May that the ex-PM has been arrested since his ousting last April. THe last time he was arrested, riots broke out across the country with scores beings arrested.
