The International Olympic Committee (IOC) board on Friday approved including cricket and four other games in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The other sports were baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash, and lacrosse. The IOC will now vote at its session in Mumbai from 14 to 16 October to finalize the decision.
In its proposal, the Los Angeles Games Organising Committee recommended cricket in its T20 version for the 2028 Olympics. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed receiving this proposal as well.
"The inclusion will ... allow the Olympics to engage with new athletes and fan communities in the US and globally", IOC President Thomas Bach said.
Cricket originally made its Olympic debut in the 1900 Paris Games.
India is hosting the IOC session for the second time, after a gap of about 40 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session on 14 October 2023.
