By Wednesday 4 October, Indian sportsmen had bagged a record number of medals in the 2023 Asian Games which are taking place in Hangzhou in China until 8 October. The nation is now on the edge of its seat to see whether the tally can reach the 100 mark.
Tension mounted for Indians all over the world as the 100 medal mark in the Asian Games, which is tantalisingly within reach, seemed to slip further off after the country's star badminton player, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, was humbled by her Chinese counterpart.
Sindhu went down fighting despite her valiance in the quarterfinal, losing to China's HE Bing Jiao in straight sets 16-21, 12-21.
With this defenestration, all hopes for the 28-year-old player from Hyderabad in the badminton women's singles came to an end.

However, there was good news from India's archers after the country's women's compound archery bagged gold medal in the finals beating Chinese Taipei 230-229.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the flawless performance in his congratulatory message on X (formerly Twitter) and said: "Congratulations to @VJSurekha, @Parrneettt, and Aditi Gopichand! Their flawless performance, focus, and dedication have made our nation incredibly proud. This victory is a testament to their exceptional skill and teamwork."
In a separate event, wrestler Pooja Gehlot reached the finals of the women's freestyle 50kg category, defeating Mongolia's Tsogt-Ochiryn Namuuntsetseg. And in squash, Saurav Ghosal is now set to feature in the singles final.
On Wednesday, the biggest news of the day for Indian fans came as the country's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra successfully defended his gold medal at the Asian Games. His fellow thrower, Kishore Jena, bagged silver medal at the Olympic Sports Park Main Stadium in Hangzhou.
India now has a total of 82 medals - 19 Gold, 31 Silver, and 32 Bronze, at the 2023 Asian Games in China's city of Hangzhou.
