Sumit Antil of India achieved an incredible victory at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. On Wednesday, he secured the gold medal in the men's javelin F64 event, while also shattering the world record.
In his initial try, the reigning Olympic and world champion, Antil, not only surpassed his own record of 56.29 meters, set during the 2018 Jakarta Games, but also shattered the Asian Para Games record with an impressive throw of 66.22 meters. However, his second throw of 70.48 metres fell just short of the world record of 70.83 metres, but he easily shattered it in his third attempt with a massive throw of 73.29 metres.
He broke the world record on his third attempt, while the Asian Para Games record of 56.29 metres was broken by him on his first attempt with a throw of 66.22 metres. The Asian Para Games record was also set by Antil at the 2018 Games in Jakarta.
The world record was also set by Antil at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris earlier this year.
The silver medal in the event went to Sri Lanka's Arachchige Samitha, who threw the javelin 62.42 metres, while India's Pushpendra Singh had to settle for bronze with a throw of 62.06 metres.
Indian paddler Bhavina Patel also won a bronze medal in the Women's Singles - Class 4, losing to China's Xiaodan Gu in the semi-finals.
Two bronze medals for India were won by the team of Manisha Ramadass and Pramod Bhagat and Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan in two different matches in the Para Badminton Mixed Doubles - SL3-SU5 event.
Later, Shreyansh Trivedi won a bronze medal for the country in the Men's 200m - T37 event while Narayan Thakur also won a bronze medal in the Men's 200m - T35 event.
India's second gold medal of the day came from Haney in the men's javelin F37/38, who also broke the Asian Para Games record with a throw of 55.97 metres.
Indian Para archers Harvinder Singh and Sahil won bronze in the Men's Doubles Recurve - Open category, while Sandeep Dangi won a bronze medal for the country in the Men's Singles - Class 1 in Para Table Tennis and Pooja won a silver medal in the Women's Discus - F54/55 event.
