Weighing between 20 to 50 kilograms, Sowa is famed for harboring rare minerals in its belly, which are believed to possess healing and medicinal properties. Moreover, the fine, thread-like substance found in these fish is utilised in surgical procedures.
“The entire catch was sold for some 70 million Pakistani rupees (approx $243,526) at the Karachi harbour on Friday morning when fishermen auctioned off their catch,” Mubarak Khan of the Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum said.
Baloch, who lives in Karachi's Ibrahim Hyderi fishing village, told local reporters that one Sowa fish fetches around 7 million pakistani rupees in the auction.
“We were fishing in the open sea of Karachi...when we came across this huge cache of golden fish, and it was a windfall for us,” Baloch said.
Baloch said the money would also be shared with his crew of seven people.
