Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed serious concern over the threat of deepfake videos and the potential misuse of technology, highlighting the problematic nature of this technological advancement.
"I saw a video recently where I was singing. People who like me forwarded it," he said, addressing journalists at BJP's Diwali Milan program at the party's headquarters in New Delhi.
Modi also requested the ChatGPT team to identify and alert viewers when deepfake videos are shared online.
Recently, deepfake videos and photos of Indian celebrities went viral on social media. Many actors spoke about the rise of deepfake videos and the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to spread fake news, blackmail, extortion and harassment.
Last week, federal minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that online platforms were legally obligated to prevent the spread of misinformation and stringent their laws.
The minister said the government takes deepfake videos and misuse of AI seriously, especially against children and women who are targeted by such content.
Chandrasekhar also said that the creation and circulation of fake content on social media attract a penalty INR 100,000 ($1,201).
