The rise in deepfake videos and photos of Indian public figures has raised alarms about the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in spreading fake news, blackmailing, extortion, and harassment.
Actress Kajol Devgan has become the latest victim of a deepfake video after a morphed video clip, in which she can be seen changing clothes, appeared on the internet, sparking a new controversy. She follows actors Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif who likewise suffered from deepfakes.
Deepfakes are digitally manipulated videos, photos, and audio that spread fake information and are used in creating pornographic content, hateful comments, and showcasing someone inappropriately.
In the video, Kajol's face has been superimposed on the body of a social media influencer, Rosie Breen, who uploaded the video on social media on 5 June as part of the “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) trend.
In the past, several other public figures like Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johannson, Kristen Bell, and others have become a victim of deepfake videos.
The cyber crime cell of India and AI experts are making all efforts to develop tools for detecting deepfake content and raising awareness about its existence.
Several actors, politicians, and others call for strict action against the culprits for identity theft and misusing AI to spread fake information, harass, extort, blackmail and even sexually assault individuals.
