Rohit Sharma's response to a reporter's query on Monday stirred the internet amid buzz over his future as Team India skipper in the T20I and ODI formats.
Interestingly, Rohit hasn't played a T20I game for India since November 2022 and an ODI in national colors since the 2023 Cricket World Cup final defeat to Australia last month.
With the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the US a couple of months away, there's intense speculation about the Nagpur-born cricketer's participation in the competition.
However, Rohit created more confusion rather than clearing the air on the matter in his press conference in South Africa's Centurion.
The 36-year-old stated that he was "desperate" to win an elusive Test series against the Proteas.
When a media person asked if he was desperate to participate in the forthcoming T20 World Cup next year in June, Rohit's reply left everyone bemused.
"Desperation is there for everyone to play cricket. Everyone wants to play and everyone wants to do well. Wherever they get a chance, they will want to perform well. Mujhe pata hain aap kya bolne ki koshish kar rahe ho, milega aapko, jawab milega uska (I know what you are trying to ask here and you will get your answer," Rohit noted.
It is worth noting that Rohit no longer captains India in T20Is, with Hardik Pandya the designated skipper in the format since last year.
But recent reports in the media, citing unnamed sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), suggested that he could don the captain's cap in the T20 World Cup.
