The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has strongly condemned derogatory remarks made by its politicians against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lakshadweep visit.
Terming India as one of the closest neighbours and allies of the Maldives, MATI said that India remains one of the top markets for the Maldives and has been a "consistent and significant contributor to the tourism industry of the Maldives."
MATI emphasized their commitment to maintaining a positive and respectful relationship with India and refraining from actions or speech that may have any negative impact on the two nations' alliance.
A massive controversy erupted after the Maldives deputy minister, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made derogatory remarks against PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep.
On January 2, PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and shared several pictures, including an 'exhilarating experience' of him trying his hand at snorkeling.
Politicians from the ruling party of the Maldives, through their posts on X, criticized India's efforts to promote Lakshadweep tourism.
Some also accused India of targeting the Maldives and said India faces significant challenges in competing with the Maldives in beach tourism.
