The 67-year-old Champai Soren, on Friday, was sworn in as the 12th chief minister of Jharkhand.
A prominent tribal leader and politician, Soren was born into an agricultural family, and received his education till 10th standard from a government school.
Soren, widely recognized as the 'Jharkhand Tiger', earned this title for his significant contribution to the movement for the establishment of a separate Jharkhand state from Bihar in the late 90s.
Soren emerged victorious as an independent MLA in the by-election held for the Saraikela constituency in 1991.
In November 2000, Jharkhand became a separate state from Bihar, and in 2005, Soren was elected as a legislator from Saraikela in Jharkhand, representing the JMM party.
He has since taken on multiple roles as a Cabinet Minister, including Transport, Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Caste & Backward Class Welfare, Food Supplies, Science and Technology, Labour, and Housing.
