Delhi has green-lit the production of 34 Dhruv advanced light helicopters (ALH), marking a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing, Indian media has reported.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will be responsible for manufacturing these helicopters, distributing nine to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and twenty-five to the Indian Army.
This decision reportedly reflects a commitment to enhance domestic defense capabilities and replace aging helicopters.
The government likewise approved a project to upgrade BMP infantry vehicles for the Indian Army Mechanised Infantry Regiment.
These initiatives - the Dhruv production and BMP upgrades - are anticipated to be valued at over INR 8,000 crore i.e., $967 million, underscoring the government's strong emphasis on bolstering indigenous defense capabilities.
HAL has domestically designed and developed the Dhruv advanced light helicopter, a versatile helicopter in the 5.5-ton weight class, catering to various roles.
Widely utilized by the Indian Armed Forces, particularly the Indian Army, the Dhruv operates effectively in challenging terrains such as the Siachen Glacier and Ladakh, reaching extreme altitudes. However, recent concerns have emerged regarding mechanical issues and reliability within the armed forces.
Similarly on Friday, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved a long-term proposal for the indigenous design and development of a fifth-generation advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA).
This development aligns with the futuristic requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF), demonstrating a commitment to advancing military capabilities.
