Manila is considering acquiring weapons from New Delhi instead of the West, a Filipino expert informed Sputnik India, stressing that India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's (HAL) catalog of products fits into the needs of the archipelago nation's forces.The comments come from defense analyst Miguel Miranda amid reports of Indian defense companies like HAL, Kalyani Strategic Systems, and Larsen and Toubro Ltd, eyeing exports of military platforms to the Philippines.Manila Keen to Acquire Fighter Jets and HelicoptersPreviously, HAL's Managing Director CB Ananthakrishnan had revealed that Manila was keen to acquire LCA Tejas aircraft from India. According to India's aviation behemoth, Tejas is a 4.5-generation modern aircraft that is said to be the lightest in its class.Interestingly, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is already operating two squadrons of the Tejas aircraft, with the third slated to be inducted early next year. Manila is also interested in procuring the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv MK-III from HAL.BrahMos Deal With Philippines a Historic Win For IndiaAgainst this backdrop, Miranda, who runs the popular military website, 21st Century Asian Arms Race, reckoned that a formidable defense partnership was taking shape between India and the Philippines.In January 2022, the Philippines signed an agreement to purchase three batteries of the highly acclaimed BrahMos missile in a deal worth $375 million from India. With the development, Manila became the first foreign buyer of the supersonic projectile. Miranda underlined that it was not surprising that Manila, despite its constant diplomacy, was finding itself in an impossible situation with China.That's why, he noted that the Armed Forces of the Philippines were keeping their tenders and other procurement efforts for better equipment alive. The Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard in particular have an urgent need to grow, the Manila-based strategic affairs specialist elaborated.New Delhi Can Take Bulk Export Orders for Military Hardware"When one considers Indian manufacturers eager to win deals in the Philippines they encompass all the big and small players. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's (HAL) catalog of products fits into the needs of the archipelago nation's forces.
The comments come from defense analyst Miguel Miranda amid reports of Indian defense companies like HAL,
Kalyani Strategic Systems, and
Larsen and Toubro Ltd,
eyeing exports of military platforms to the
Philippines.
Manila Keen to Acquire Fighter Jets and Helicopters
Previously, HAL's Managing Director CB Ananthakrishnan had revealed that Manila was keen to acquire LCA Tejas aircraft from India.
According to India's aviation behemoth, Tejas is a 4.5-generation modern aircraft that is said to be the lightest in its class.
"Nigeria, Philippines and Egypt are keen to procure TEJAS," Ananthakrishnan stated during an event.
Interestingly, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is already operating two squadrons of the Tejas aircraft, with the third slated to be
inducted early next year.
Manila is also interested in procuring the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv MK-III from HAL.
BrahMos Deal With Philippines a Historic Win For India
Against this backdrop, Miranda, who runs the popular military website, 21st Century Asian Arms Race, reckoned that a formidable defense partnership was taking shape between India and the Philippines.
"New Delhi has been making overtures to the Philippines for more than a decade now. The recent acquisition of BrahMos missiles by the Philippine Navy finally breathed life into a budding alliance. Even if it took years before the decision was made, the BrahMos deal is a historic win for India's aspirations to export its local military tech," he told Sputnik India on Tuesday.

"HAL in particular is in a good position right now as its catalog fits the needs of the Philippine military and government. In fact, HAL's light helicopter and small fixed-wing transport aircraft are a perfect fit for the Filipino forces," he pointed out.
Military Ties Between India and the Philippines Picking Up Pace
Military ties between Manila and New Delhi have grown at an unprecedented pace of late, especially after the former's move to acquire the BrahMos
rockets from the latter.
Earlier this year, foreign ministers of the two nations laid the framework for defense cooperation between the two Asian countries.
"On defense cooperation, both Ministers expressed keen interest to continue to work together in this sector, including through the regular or upgraded official level interaction among defense agencies, opening of the resident defense attaché office in Manila, consideration of India’s offer for concessional line of credit to meet Philippines' defense requirements, acquisition of naval assets, and expansion of training and joint exercises on maritime security and disaster response, among others," a joint statement released after the meeting between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and his Philippine counterpart Enrique A. Manalo read.
