India successfully test-fired its 1st indigenously-made 1500 horsepower (HP) engine for main battle tanks at Bharat Earth Movers Limited's (BEML) complex in Karnataka's Mysuru city on Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane said during the inauguration that this achievement would enhance the Army's capabilities, highlighting India's technological expertise and commitment to self-reliance in defense technologies.

The 1500 HP engine is a game changer in India's military propulsion systems, with cutting-edge features such as a high power-to-weight ratio and the ability to operate in extreme conditions including high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, and desert environments.
The successful test-firing of the 1500 HP engine marks the culmination of Generation One, which has been dedicated to technology stabilization.
Generation Two will witness BEML's production of engines for a range of trials at the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, a DRDO laboratory, as well as their integration into real vehicles for user testing. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2025.
